The grant would help towards the tuition fees and living expenses, along with my savings. On the form you fill in for the grant, (PN1 form), it says to declare all taxable unearned income, this is because you are income assessed. National Savings & Investments make a big play of the fact that they are backed by the Treasury and so your savings are guaranteed up to any limit ... but just how safe is that assurance? I now have a significant sum deposited with NS&I and I'd like to be reassured that it is really safe.

I have just been given the book for a savings account which my parents set up some 25 years ago but has been dormant for some time now. It is an 'Investment account' with the 'national savings bank' - it was done through the post office.
