Since overseas elections were first introduced in Korea during the 19th National Assembly elections in 2012, 700,000 overseas Korean nationals participated in a total of six elections.

It is an independent constitutional agency established in accordance with the Article 114 of the Constitution in 1963, equal in status with the government, the National Assembly, the Supreme Court, and the Constitutional Court.
