The Kanheri Caves (Kānherī-guhā [kaːnʱeɾiː ɡuɦaː]) are a group of caves and rock-cut monuments cut into a massive basalt outcrop in the forests of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, on the island of Salsette in the western outskirts of Mumbai, India.

The name Kanheri is derived from ‘Kanhagiri’ in Prakrit and occurs in the Nasik inscription of the Satavahana ruler Vasisthiputra Pulumavi.
A 2,000-year-old complex sits within the park, housing more than 100 (is this correct) caves cut out of rock forming a protected archaeological site. The word ‘Kanheri’ is derived from Sanskrit word ‘Krishnagiri’, which literally means ‘black mountain’.
