Welcome to the adventure capital of the world! Inyo County is a land of magnificent natural diversity. Mount Whitney is the highest peak in the lower 48 states. Death Valley is the lowest point in the U.S., and the Great Basin bristlecone pines are the oldest life forms in the world.
Today Inyo County is the second largest county in California at 10,227 square miles, yet has a relatively sparse population of 18,144 (as of 2016 Census estimates). Independence is the County Seat. Inyo County has a rich indigenous history, as well as a legacy that also traces its roots to pioneering, mining, railroading, ranching, and farming.
Inyo County offers something for everyone, from the outdoor enthusiast to the person who loves to just take a break from the hustle and bustle of city life. Covering 10,140 sq. miles and proudly featuring both the highest and lowest elevations in the state.
The Inyo County Free Library was formed in 1913, serves a population of about 18,000, and has six branches. The Library has a rich collection of local history materials at the Central Library in Independence, the county seat.
The Assessor's Office is responsible for administering the county property assessment program. Revenues based on property assessments benefit the public by funding public schools and services administered by the county, cities, and special districts.
