Sono finito instead is the conjugation of "to befinished" where finished is considered an adjective: I forgot my girlfriend's birthday: I'm finished, she will kill me.

If one of the li/le/lo/la forms comes for the verb avere (unless le is a person and it's dative) the participe ends with the same letter as li/le/lo/la, no matter if the form is abbreviated or not.
