Can I conclude that "ashes" is the only words that doesn't belong to the following group of words that are in plural form but have singular meaning. Economics. civics.
Apr 30, 2008 · USA English. Apr 30, 2008. #3. To my ear and mind, it is simply the idea of a singular or plural origin of the ash. A cigarette has an ash. The ashtray was full of cigarette ashes (from more than one cigarette). If I burn one thing, it creates an ash. More than one thing creates ashes. Of course there are instances where we have "collective" nouns.

For example you tap a cigaratte or cigar to drop the ashes/ash off the end. So we might say "I almost inhaled some of the floating ashes from the campfire". But I don't know any English word for them.

I suppose you could use "dispose" but the meaning would change and it wouldn't make much sense. At present it means the baked-on grime gets reduced to (and becomes) ash that can be easily removed.
