Sanford Robinson Gifford (July 10, 1823 – August 29, 1880) was an American landscape painter and a leading member of the second generation of Hudson River School artists. A highly-regarded practitioner of Luminism, his work was noted for its emphasis on light and soft atmospheric effects.

A major Hudson River school painter with extensive European experience, Gifford traveled west several times. In 1870 he joined F. V. Hayden's geological survey to Wyoming, leaving his two artist-companions, John F. Kensett and Worthington Whittredge, behind in Denver.

Sanford Robinson Gifford. Greenfield, 1823 -Nueva York, 1880. Print page. Sanford Robinson Gifford was born in Greenfield, New York, on 10 July 1823. The son of a prosperous foundry owner, he spent his boyhood in Hudson, New York. Between 1842 and 1844 he attended the Brown University.
Gifford visited Tivoli, Italy, in 1856, on his first trip abroad. A dozen years later, he was drawn back to what he described as “one of the finest views in the world”: the prospect toward Rome up the valley of the Aniene River, past the Cascatelle (waterfalls) pouring from the arches of the so-called villa of Maecenas.
