Gawa was born into an aristocratic family and was the last heiress in the Chogyal dynasty of rulers who ruled sections of Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya. In 1989, Danny’s mother had met her in Gangtok and instantly liked her and decided to marry Gawa with Danny.

His mother was ill, and she insisted Danny to marry her. Before marrying her, Danny was in a relationship with actresses Parveen Babi and Kim Yashpal. Though she lives with her family in Mumbai, during the rainy season her family spends their holidays in Sikkim every year.
