Madhya Pradesh (/ ˌ m ɑː d j ə p r ə ˈ d ɛ ʃ /, Hindi: [ˈməd̪ʱjə pɾəˈdeːʃ] ⓘ; meaning 'central province') is a state in central India. Its capital is Bhopal, and the largest city is Indore, with Gwalior, Jabalpur, Ujjain, Dewas, Sagar, and Rewa being the other major cities.
The history of Madhya Pradesh can be divided into three periods - the ancient period, the medieval period and modern period. During the ancient period, the region was dominated by the Nanda Empire , the Maurya Empire , and the Gupta Empire .
