Recently, India’s Defence Minister reviewed the ongoing work on the Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC), INS Vikrant (IAC-1), which is a part of Atmanirbhar Bharat. INS Vikrant, is likely to be commissioned in 2022. At present, India has only one aircraft carrier, the Russian-origin INS Vikramaditya.

INS Vikrant. INS Vikrant (IAC-I) is the first aircraft carrier built in India and the first Vikrant-class aircraft carrier built by Cochin Shipyard (CSL) in Kochi, Kerala for the Indian Navy. The motto of the ship is Jayema Sam Yudhi Sprdhah which is taken from Rig Veda and is translated as “I defeat those who fight against me”.

INS Vikrant: In order to commemorate the legacy of INS Vikrant (decommissioned), the First IAC will be named as INS Vikrant. It is built at Cochin Shipyard Limited. It is currently undergoing sea trials and is likely to be commissioned in 2023.

The namesake Vikrant is a tribute to India’s first aircraft carrier INS Vikrant (1961). Vikrant means “courageous” in Sanskrit.
