Jan 11, 2024 · Peggy Guggenheim’s main period of collecting coincided with the war years: her American income allowed her to buy at a time when many in Europe were selling. With the goal of trying to “buy a picture a day”, in the midst of political and economic turmoil, she acquired works of art that became the bedrock of her collection.

In 1949, Peggy Guggenheim (1898 - 1979) bought the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, to become her home for thirty years. She was born to a wealthy family in New York City. Her father was Benjamin Guggenheim, who went down with the Titanic in 1912, and her uncle was Solomon R. Guggenheim, who established the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation.
