It is the southernmost member of the University of Texas System. The University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 after the consolidation of the University of Texas at Brownsville/Texas Southmost College and the University of Texas–Pan American.

Dec 10, 2001 · In the 1980s, while Pan American University was making plans to merge with the University of Texas System, the administration of Pan American University–Brownsville attempted to gain autonomy for their school; however, on May 26, 1989, it became part of the UT System as the University of Texas–Pan American–Brownsville. In September 1991 the name was changed to the University of Texas at Brownsville and the school began a partnership with Texas Southmost College.
