A doughty fighter, Lakshmi was captured in 1946, by which time she had attained near-mythical status in the popular imagination. After her release, she married a colonel and Indian National Army colleague.
Lakshmi Sahgal was born October 24, 1914, in Malabar, a city in Madras state in Southern India. Her parents were comfortably well off: Her father, Subbarama Swaminathan, was a Harvard-educated lawyer, and her mother, Ammukutty “Ammu” Swaminathan, evolved from a child bride to a social worker and political activist.
