Apr 8, 2016 · At a lean 95 minutes, the film manages to shift multiple perspectives within its ensemble, all anchored by the titular Insiang ( Hilda Koronel ), an exceptionally beautiful 17-year-old girl tended over by her distracted single mother, Tanya ( Mona Lisa ), who’s still bitter from being abandoned by her husband and Insiang’s father.
Insiang is arguably Brocka's masterpiece - it's his most intense work, the intensity sustained from beginning to the end. It has the best-structured screenplay of all his pictures (by Lamberto Antonio, based on the original television script by Mario O'Hara); it's also one of his most atypical, and atypical of even most other Filipino films.
Insiang is the put-upon daughter of the slums who endures abuse from everyone in her orbit: her insensitive boyfriend; her harpy mother; and her mother’s sleazy younger lover. But after she’s raped by him, Insiang’s timidity hardens into a steely resolve to get even, and exact vicious revenge.
Insiang is a tale of sorrow, betrayal, and ultimately revenge. What the synopses don’t tell you (spoilers ahead) is that the film doesn’t pivot around one act of sexual violence; there are three critical cruelties happening in quick succession that manage to push the titular Insiang to a drastic change of persona.

But with his misery-wrought finale, and its tangled knot of obstinate, volatile, unfulfilled feelings and desires, Brocka ensures that any minor triumph enjoyed by his morally and emotionally warped protagonist is tempered by an overriding dose of bittersweet sorrow and despair.

Ternyata, “Insiang” hanyalah sebuah nama, dari seorang perempuan yang berasal dari sebuah perkampungan kumuh di Tondo, Filipina. Insiang, diperankan oleh Hilda Koronel, adalah seorang putri tunggal yang hidup dengan Ibunya.
