Richard Marquand was a Welsh film director known for directing the sixth instalment of the Star War series, Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (1983). He made his directorial debut with the horror movie The Legacy (1978). His other notable projects include Hearts of Fire (1987) and Nowhere to Run (1993), which were released posthumously.
Lucas eventually chose Richard Marquand. Lucas operated the second camera on set a few times. Lucas has admitted to being on the set frequently because of Marquand's relative inexperience with special effects. Lucas praised Marquand as a "very nice person who worked well with actors".
