A Choice of Enemies, Allbeury's first book, is about a British spy named Ted Bailey who defects to Poland after learning that his missing daughter is there under the control of a Belgian double-agent named Berger. Reasoning during his defection that personal loyalties are more important than national interests, he nonetheless makes one last attempt to thwart Berger's plans.
