William Bowers was born on 17 January 1916 in Las Cruces, New Mexico, USA. He was a writer and actor, known for The Gunfighter (1950), Support Your Local Sheriff! (1969) and The Godfather Part II (1974).
A screenwriter and former journalist, he won Oscars for his scripts for The Gunfighter and The Sheepman. He was one of several non-actors picked by Francis Ford Coppola to appear in the trial scene in The Godfather Part II, along with Roger Corman. After his work on The Godfather Part II, Coppola hired Bowers as a staff writer for Zoetrope Studios, a position he held until his death. He died in 1987. In his role, Bowers assists faculty/staff/students to identify research, scholarly, and creative funding opportunities; encourages collaboration, particularly across disciplines; serves an ex officio role on faculty advisory committees; networks with funding agencies, foundations and other granting entities; and promotes and advocates for the research agenda on campus both to the campus administration, as well as the research community.
