William Nicholson is a screenwriter, playwright, television writer, and novelist. In addition to his Academy Award–nominated screenplays for Shadowlands and Gladiator, he is the author of Motherland; several young adult and fantasy novels; and a sequence of contemporary adult novels set in England. He lives in Sussex, England.

Currently the two projects occupying me are ‘Cryptoqueen’, an 8-part TV series for Netflix based on Jamie Bartlett’s brilliant BBC podcast ‘The Missing Cryptoqueen’; and ‘A Little Madness’, also for Netflix, based on Horatio Clare’s memoir of his own descent into madness, ‘Heavy Light’.

William Nicholson was educated at Downside School and Christ’s College, Cambridge, and then joined BBC Television, where he worked as a documentary film maker. There his ambition to write, directed first into novels, was channeled into television drama.
William Nicholson is a British playwright, screenwriter and novelist deemed one of the biggest cultural icons of the UK. His father was a specialist in tropical medicine who worked to eradicate leprosy in Nigeria while his mother was the daughter of a South African Jew that went to Somerville, where she graduated with a First class in English.
Nicholson loved poetry and illustrated the works of his writer friends (such as W.H. Davies and Siegfried Sassoon) and others. Together with Robert Graves, who married Nicholson’s daughter Nancy in 1918, he edited the review The Owl .
