The university is recognized by the UGC as a state university and is a member of the Association of Indian Universities.
The territorial jurisdiction of the University is stretched over the whole of Saran Division Comprising three districts of Chapra, Siwan and Gopalganj. The Colleges situated in these districts were automatically transferred to Jai Prakash University, Chapra.

Jai Prakash Vishwavidyalaya was established in 1990 and located in the Saran Division of Bihar. It currently comprises of 21 colleges and 11 affiliated colleges. The university offers courses in four main faculties: Social Science, Commerce, Science, and Humanities.
