Apr 7, 2005 · The Moth Diaries contains a definite echo of Henry James's 'The Turn of the Screw' in the sense that the narrator is clearly unreliable, although not necessarily always wrong. There's also a hint of Donna Tartt's 'The Secret History' in the portrayal of an enclosed, elite college in which the study of esoteric subjects leads to over-heated imaginations.

A modern gothic coming of age story set in a world of obsessive teenage girl friendship. Haunted by a family tragedy, Rebecca returns to the safe haven of her all-girl boarding school expecting a happy year with her friends. When a new girl arrives, Rebecca finds her friendships torn apart and her sanity threatened by this mysterious newcomer. 2011 Samson Films / MD (Quebec) Productions Inc.
The Moth Diaries was the one real exception, with the lowest LB rating in my list even though it was directed by Mary Harron (American Psycho), from a book by a female author - firsts for me in this marathon. Rebecca (Sarah Bolger) attends a private girls boarding school with her best friend Lucy (Sarah Gadon), who helped her survive after her father committed suicide.
