Dame Peggy Ashcroft DBE, born Edith Margaret Emily Ashcroft, was an acclaimed Academy Award-winning English actress. One of her earliest film roles was the minor part of the crofter's wife in Alfred Hitchcock 's The 39 Steps (1935). She died in London, following a stroke at the age of 83.
