John Hurt was born on January 22, 1940, in Chesterfield, Derbyshire to Phyllis and Arnould Herbert Hurt. His mother was an amateur actress and engineer while his father was a mathematician who became a clergyman for the Church of England. He even served as the Vicar of Shirebrook and St John’s parish, Sunderland.
A beloved British actor of considerable range, Hurt delivered unforgettable performances in the likes of Alien (1979), Heaven’s Gate (1980) and Nineteen Eighty-Four (1984). He received seven BAFTA nominations, winning for The Naked Civil Servant (1975), Midnight Express (1978) and The Elephant Man (1980), and was also recognised with an Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema award in 2012.
