William Gilbert Strang (born November 27, 1934) is an American mathematician known for his contributions to finite element theory, the calculus of variations, wavelet analysis and linear algebra. He has made many contributions to mathematics education, including publishing mathematics textbooks.

Gilbert Strang is Professor Emeritus of Mathematics, MIT, since July 2023. Previous to his retirement he was the MathWorks Professor of Mathematics as of 2011, the first holder of this faculty chair. He came to MIT upon completing the Ph.D. from UCLA in 1959 under the direction of Peter Henrici.
