Sep 1, 2023 · Þjóðminjasafn – the National Museum of Iceland – was formally established on 24 February 1863. Initially, the Icelandic collection was preserved in Danish museums, but the need for a dedicated Icelandic institution became evident. Jón Árnason was appointed the first curator, entrusted with the responsibility of the Antiquarian Collection.
The museum offers a variety of fascinating exhibitions and one permanent display illustrating lavishly the story of Iceland’s past, from the medieval days of Viking settlements to current contemporary culture. The main exhibition has over 2,000 artefacts discovered in various parts of the country.
