The earliest known use of the word refine is in the mid 1600s. OED's earliest evidence for refine is from before 1635, in the writing of Richard Corbet, bishop of Oxford and of Norwich, and poet. It is also recorded as a verb from the late 1500s. refine is formed within English, by conversion; probably partly modelled on a French lexical item.
