Steven Ovett. Revered as an all time great of global middle distance running Ovett set six world records and was nigh on unbeatable between 1977 and 1981. His great rivalry with Sebastian Coe-- not that they raced each other much at all-- elevated athletics to a level of popularity that at times rivalled Football (!).
Apart from his record breaking feats, Steve Ovett was a brilliant competitor and built an outstanding record in major championships. At 800 metres he won the European Junior title in 1973, the European Cup in 1975 and the Olympic gold medal in 1980.
