Toluene is one of the most abundantly produced chemicals. Its main uses are (1) as a precursor to benzene and xylenes, (2) as a solvent for thinners, paints, lacquers, adhesives, and (3) as an additive for gasoline. Precursor to benzene and xylenes. For the separation of toluene from other components within the same boiling range several methods are available, depending on quality requirements. Fine fractionation is now suitable only for the production of toluene with lower purity, and involves significant losses in fores and tails.
