Lakshmi Sahgal was born October 24, 1914, in Malabar, a city in Madras state in Southern India. Her parents were comfortably well off: Her father, Subbarama Swaminathan, was a Harvard-educated lawyer, and her mother, Ammukutty “Ammu” Swaminathan, evolved from a child bride to a social worker and political activist.
Lakshmi Sahgal was an officer of the Indian Army and was also referred to as Captain Lakshmi. Lakshmi was a World War II veteran and spent time as a prisoner in Burma. When she heard that Bose was recruiting women soldiers as well, she gave her name.
