Vishnuvardhan's father was a famous artist and script writer for films. His father also taught dance. Vishnu's sister, Smt. Ramaramachandra, was a famous kathak dancer, who was praised by the King of Mysore. Vishnuvardhan has one elder brother and four sisters. Vishnuvardhan was born in Kumbakonam as the eldest son to Kulasekaran. His younger brother is actor Krishna Sekhar. Vishnuvardhan graduated from Chennai and was a visual communication student who studied at the Loyola College at Chennai. As a child, Vishnu had also done small roles in Mani Ratnam's Anjali and later on during his teenage years, continued to do brief roles in films like The Terrorist, Fiza, Malli and Asoka.

Vishnuvardhana (r. 1108–1152 CE) was a king of the Hoysala Empire in what is today the modern state of Karnataka, India. He ascended the Hoysala throne after the death of his elder brother Veera Ballala I in c.1108.
