Jorge Semprún was no stranger to controversy, for at one point not only had he been accused of being a kapo for the communists who practically ran Buchenwald, he had also been accused of lying and outright manipulation when he wrote in The Long Voyage that the camp gates read "Arbeit Macht Frei" or 'work sets you free', rather than "Jedem Das Seine" or 'to each his own' as they in fact did.
